Trinity College, Dublin

Trinity College, Dublin

Trinity College, formally known as the College of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Queen Elizabeth near Dublin, is the sole constituent college of the University of Dublin in Ireland. The college was founded in 1592 as the "mother" of a new university, modelled after the collegiate universities of Oxford and of Cambridge, but, unlike these, only one college was ever established; as such, the designations "Trinity College" and "University of Dublin" are usually synonymous for practical purposes. It is one of the seven ancient universities of Britain and Ireland, as well as Ireland's oldest university.Originally established outside the city walls of Dublin in the buildings of the dissolved Augustinian Priory of All Hallows, Trinity College was set up in part to consolidate the rule of the Tudor monarchy in Ireland, and it was seen as the university of the Protestant Ascendancy for much of its history. Although Roman Catholics and Dissenters had been permitted to enter as early as 1793, certain restrictions on their membership of the college remained until 1873 (professorships, fellowships and scholarships were reserved for Protestants), and the Catholic Church in Ireland forbade its adherents, without permission from their bishop, from attending until 1970. Women were first admitted to the college as full members in 1904.

Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology

Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology

Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology or IADT is located at Dún Laoghaire, Ireland. It was established in 1997 and incorporated the former Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design as its School of Creative Arts.CampusDun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology is located on Kill Avenue, about two kilometers west of Dun Laoghaire on the 46A/75 bus routes, close to Bakers Corner and Deansgrange. The former Dún Laoghaire College of Art and Design (now part of the Faculty of Film, Art and Creative Technologies at IADT) moved to the campus in the early 1980s. This move facilitated an expansion of facilities and led to the creation of IADT in 1997.The Institute's site is formerly a Christian Brothers home (Carriglea Park Industrial School, 1894–1954). In the 2009 Report on child abuse, the Christian Brothers were found to be seen in a relatively favourable, if incompetent, light in comparison to abuses in other industrial schools, and still play a key part in the Dun Laoghaire area, albeit entirely separate to the Dun Laoghaire campus.Prior to being bought by the Christian Brothers, Carriglea was a 40-acre (160,000 m2) Georgian residence owned by the Goff Family. The Reverend Robert Goff purchased the estate in 1826 for use as his principal residence. The Reverend Goff died in 1844 and the estate passed to his wife and family. Both the Reverend Robert Goff and his wife are interred in the church in Monkstown. IADT has a collection of diaries written by the Reverend Goff from the late 18th Century until his death. The college has developed amenities such as the Media Cube for enterprise projects and SMEs in the technology sector and is expanding its campus to incorporate further departments and students. Sports facilities such as a full sized all weather floodlight soccer pitch have been added in recent years.

King's Inns

King's Inns

The Honorable Society of King's Inns is the institution which controls the entry of barristers-at-law into the justice system of Ireland. The full title retains the historical spelling variant "honorable" in preference to the contemporary Irish/British "honourable" (see article 'spelling differences').HistoryThe society was created in 1541, this being 51 years before Trinity College, Dublin was founded, making it one of Ireland's oldest professional and educational institutions. The founders named their society in honour of King Henry VIII of England and his newly-established Kingdom of Ireland. The society secured a lease of lands at Inns Quay on the north bank of the River Liffey in Dublin. The society was reconstituted in 1607, having been inactive for some time. In 1790 the Inns Quays site was acquired for the purposes of the Four Courts; the foundation stone at the present building at the top of Henrietta Street was laid on 1 August 1800, with James Gandon being commissioned as the architect. The building was completed by his pupil Henry Aaron Baker.Academic LifeFrom almost the moment that King's Inns was founded, London required Irishmen who wished to practice as barristers to attend the inns of court in London, and that requirement stayed in place until the late nineteenth century. Only from the middle of the eighteenth century onwards were courses of legal education provided at King's Inns. Candidates who have an approved law degree may apply for the Degree of Barrister-at-Law ( ). Alternatively, candidates without an approved law degree may undertake the society's Diploma in Legal Studies before presenting for the society's degree. Those who are presented with the degree are entitled to be called to and practise at the "Bar of Ireland". In 2006, the society had an enrolment of approximately 300 students, whilst there are approximately 2,000 practising barristers.
