Kells Heritage Park

Kells Heritage Park

The Kells Heritage Park Project aims to develop a Public Amenity Park at the Commons of Lloyd, on part of the 357 acres owned by Kells Town Council. The Park will include Walking & Cycling Trails through quiet off-road scenic countryside, with copses of Native Trees planted at strategic locations. This development aims to address the lack of safe, off-road Walking & Cycling options close to Kells town, without having to drive. It will be accessible from both the Cavan Road and the Oldcastle road. The Park will improve the quality of life for the people of Kells and the surrounding area, and also attract tourism, thus bringing economic benefits. It will encompass the existing features, such as the Ringforts, Famine Graveyard, Spire, Playground, Field Names, the Special Area of Conservation, as well as links to History and Mythology (Tain Bo Cuilgne), all in a working Farm environment. It may also in time include a Bandstand and an open air Theatre (using the disused quarry in the Spire Field), a small Wetland Area, Viewing points with Information Boards (Loughcrew, Loughan Lay etc), Garden of the Senses, Wildflower Garden, Wheelchair Access Garden, Art Pieces, a Time Capsule, Toddlers Play Area, Etched Landscape Views on the glass of the Spire, facility for Fishing by Disabled people. It is hoped it will facilitate workshops on Drystone Wall building, Hedge Laying, Guided Walks, Band Recitals, Cycle Track, Designated Dog Walk, Beehives, Astronomy. It will be a valuable amenity to local people and Visitors to the area, and also provide an Educational Resource in Ecology, Forestry and Heritage for School Tours. It will be accessible on foot from the Town on both the Cavan Road and the Oldcastle Road, and will link with the existing Walkways on the site, the Sli na Slainte, and any long distance Walkways along the Blackwater that may be developed in future.
