The Everyman

The Everyman

15 MacCurtain Street , Cork ,
The Everyman is one of Ireland’s leading middle scale presenting and producing theatres. The beautiful 650 seat theatre is a jewel of late Victorian architecture. A listed building, the theatre is steeped in history and is a favourite with audiences and performers alike for its intimacy and atmosphere. Presenting an extraordinary range of live entertainment, the Everyman has hosted performances in recent years by artists and companies as diverse as Ed Harris, Druid, Gate Theatre, Blue Raincoat Theatre Company, Abbey Theatre, Sir Tom Courtenay, Edward Fox, David Suchet, The Godot Company, Chinese State Circus, Royal Shakespeare Company, The Frames, Steven Berkoff, Opera Theatre Company, Paul Brady, Esbjorn Svensson Trio, Tommy Tiernan, Herbie Hancock, Keith Barry and many more. As well as presenting a diverse range of touring theatre, the Everyman has produced or co-produced twenty one theatre pieces since 2005, with work touring nationally and internationally. In 2005 the theatre produced the world premiere of Wrecks by Neil LaBute starring Ed Harris, which toured to New York's Public Theatre in 2006. In 2007 the Everyman produced the acclaimed national tour of Dublin Carol by Conor McPherson, directed by Patrick Talbot, a new stage adaptation of Stone Mad by Seamus Murphy, directed by Pat Kiernan, as well as the first ever staging of Frank O’Connor’s Guests of the Nation performed by Denis Conway and directed by Patrick Talbot. In 2008 Everyman Palace Theatre produced Rita Dunne a show written and directed by Patrick Talbot. In 2009 the Everyman Palace Theatre produced/co-produced four theatre pieces including Big Maggie by John B. Keane, a national tour of Days of Wine and Roses by Owen McCafferty directed by Conall Morrison, in partnership with Civic Theatre and Galloglass Theatre Company and The People’s Republic of Gerry Murphy as part of Cork Midsummer Festival. In 2010 we produced Side By Side By Sondheim starring Joe Corbett, Mary Hegarty and Majellah Cullagh, designed by Joe Vanek and directed by Patrick Talbot. We also produced Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking, starring Gerry McLoughlin, designed by Lisa Zagone and directed by Mary Curtin. We were co-producers on FML, along with Cork Midsummer Festival, CAMPO Ghent, LIFT (London International Festival of Theatre) and Ulster Bank Festival at Queens. FML had its world premiere at the Everyman Palace Theatre before embarking on a European tour in the latter half of 2010. It was revived at the Everyman in March 2011 and then toured nationally. In association with the National Theatre of Great Britain, the Everyman presented the only Irish strand of the new-writing programme, NT Connections, annually from 2004 – 2007. Performance schools like the Montforts, CADA, the Wolfe Stage School and Ballet Theatre Ireland present their showcase performances annually at the theatre. In September 2009 the first ever wedding ceremony in a theatre in Ireland was performed on the stage of the Everyman. From 2008 to 2010 we presented the Pat Murray Bursary, in association with Thomas Crosbie Holdings and Cork City Council. The bursary was established to facilitate the professional development of an emerging theatre artist through specialised study, or work placement. The inaugural Pat Murray Bursary was awarded to set & costume designer Deirdre Dwyer in December 2008, by Tony Award winner Bob Crowley. As a result of the bursary Deirdre studied Theatre Design at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. The 2009 Pat Murray Bursary was awarded to playwright Jody O’Neill to facilitate a mentorship with Graham Whybrow (former literary manager of the Royal Court), travel to international theatre festivals, research and development of her writing. Jody’s play Celebrity was presented at the Project Arts Centre Dublin in January 2011. The final bursary was presented to lighting designer Sarah Louise McColgan who is studying Technical Theatre and Stage Management at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. The theatre has published two titles in association with The Collins Press, Dan Donovan – An Everyman's Life by Vera Ryan and Make 'Em Laugh! A Golden Age of Theatre by Declan Hassett. In 2012 the Everyman produced and staged the Irish Times Award winning Pagliacci (Best Opera) in association with Cork Operatic Society, Cork Midsummer Festival, Barrabas and Cork Circus. The Everyman presented Best Man by writer in residence Carmel Winters as part of the Cork Midsummer Festival 2013. We are dedicated to working with theatre professionals locally and nationally to present a high standard of theatre and opera productions. The theatre is the primary listening venue for the Guinness Jazz Festival and presents an annual traditional Christmas pantomime in association with CADA. A unique feature of the Everyman is that its Front of House ushering staff is made up entirely of volunteers. The theatre receives its primary funding from the Arts Council, with additional funding from the Cork City Council and FAS. The Everyman Board of Directors: Michael White (Chairman), Cllr Tim Brosnan, Brendan Casserly, Cllr. Lorraine Kingston, Dick Langford, Dick Lehane, Denis McSweeney, Ted Mahon-Buckley, Leachlain O’Kane, Toddy O’Sullivan, Michael Twomey.
