North West Simon Community

North West Simon Community

23 Mail Coach Rd., Sligo ,
North West Simon Community believes that any person who sleeps rough, lives in emergency accommodation or in inadequate, insecure or unsafe housing is experiencing homelessness. People sleeping out in doorways, parks, in derelict sites and in abandoned cars experience the most extreme form of homelessness. This is what most of the public think of when they hear the word 'homeless'. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. The 'invisible' homeless, people who live in emergency accommodation, in shelters, hostels, refuges, in B&Bs or double share with friends and relatives, make up about 10 times the number of people sleeping rough. They are also without a home and in need of help. Being homeless is more than about being without a roof over your head; it's about a lack of security, lack of belonging, lack of privacy and lack of safety. The experience of homelessness is arguably one of the grossest violations of human rights in developed economies like Ireland. Homelessness is not, and should never be accepted as, an inevitable outcome for any person. We believe that homelessness in Ireland can be ended. By an end to homelessness we mean no one will have to sleep rough because of a lack of appropriate services, no one will have to live in emergency accommodation for longer than is an emergency, and no one will become homeless due to a lack of services or inadequate housing provision.

Clogheen Hospice Suite Construction Fund

Clogheen Hospice Suite Construction Fund

On 1st October 2013 at 2:00 a.m. well known Ardfinnan man Pasty Savage sadly lost his battle against cancer while surrounded by his family in the Hospice Suite of St Theresa’s Hospital Clogheen. During his short illness Patsy was cared for in Waterford Regional Hospital and also Cork University Hospital. Unfortunately as Patsy’s cancer was so aggressive and rapid, treatment to fight this was no longer an option and a decision had to be made as to where Patsy would live out his last few days. Bringing him home was just not an option as 24/7 medical attention was required and unfortunately neither WRH nor CUH could offer appropriate facilities where Patsy and his family could spend private time together for his remaining days. Luckily St Theresa’s Hospital Clogheen offers the exact facilities required by people in such situations and thankfully it was made available to the family for the short duration which it was required. This Hospice Suite is one of a kind which offers a homely environment consisting of a private room for a patient along with en suite toilet and also private kitchen area for family members while spending time with their loved one. There is a private entrance to this suite so family members can come and go anytime day or night without having to pass through the main hospital with the advantage of a door leading from the patients room into the main hospital corridor, therefore having 24/7 medical attention from outstanding, caring staff members when required. This is a facility which the surrounding communities are absolutely blessed to have as many a family who find themselves in a similar situation on a weekly basis can make use of this suite. Unfortunately not everyone gets the pleasure of such comfort as it’s a room which is in constant demand and only too often situations arise where the room is required by more than one patient at any one time with a result of some families loosing out. During the 10 days that Patsy spent there it came to the attention of the Savage Family that plans are in place for a second suite to be constructed. Even though funding is in place for the second suite to go ahead, the amount allocated still falls a lot short of the total amount it will cost to complete the construction, so therefore at present the project is on hold. Following the passing of Patsy, his wife Marie pledged to do all in her power to raise much needed funding so the second suite could be constructed in order for other families to be given the same chance to spend such valuable time with their loved one in such a dignified environment before their final day arrives. Marie along with the help of her family and friends have come together to organise 4 main fundraising events in the hope that the much needed funding can be put in place to complete the construction of such a valuable facility. The 4 main events are advertised on this page. All we ask is that everyone helps in any way that they can as no one can ever be sure who will be the next to have to go knocking on that door. Also Please Note= All expenses incurred by these fundraising events will either be sponsored or provided by the Savage Family so therefore absolutely 100% of all monies raised will go straight towards this precious cause. A million thanks in advance for your support.
