Wexford Model Railway Club

Wexford Model Railway Club

Wexford Model Railway Club owes its existence to the endeavours of two local railway enthusiast’s Michael Curran and Vincent Lynch, who in the Autumn of 1978, placed an advertisement in the ‘The People ‘ newspaper seeking like-minded individuals interested in starting a model railway club in the town. The inaugural meeting took place in the Talbot hotel and attracted approximately fourteen members, six of whom are still members today. The club for the first two years met in a shared hall in the Presentation school building where its first layout was built before moving to premises in Stonebridge Lane. Then in 1985 moved to the old Church of Ireland church at Rathaspeck that became its home for over twenty five years, sadly a serious deterioration in the structural integrity of the building’s roof meant the club had to move again to a temporary premises on the industrial estate. In the last six months the club has finished work at its new purpose built premises at St Joseph’s community centre. The club was established all those years ago to promote the hobby of railway modelling in the South-East a goal it still pursues today. In furtherance of this aim it has endeavoured to showcase the hobby by participating in public exhibitions both nationally and internationally, in an effort to bring the hobby to the attention of the general public and to support local charities and community groups. The members frequently visit places of railway interest as well. Many of the clubs layouts have been featured in the international modelling press. For members over the past thirty five years, the club has endeavoured to provide an environment in which the various skills needed to participate in the pastime can be acquired, practiced and mastered, in a friendly environment. A goal we will endeavour to pursue into the future. If what we do, is of interest to you why not drop by and see for yourself what we are all about.
