Viking Longboat Project, Waterford
The Waterford Longboat Project was a FÃS Community Local Training Initiative in partnership with Waterford Museum of Treasures, Waterford City Council, Waterford Chamber of Commerce and the private sector. Waterford City has strong links to its Viking heritage, and is the only city in Ireland that retains its Norse name "Vedrarfjordr". The project began in June 2010 to build a replica of the 10th Century Viking Longboat Skuldelev 6.
There are 18 participants on the course under the supervision of Michael Power Course Co-ordinator and Michael Kennedy Shipwright.
The participants are Evan Cleary, Emmett Mc Ardle, Michael Dunne, Neill Shanahan, Barry Gaule, Leonardo Carparelli, Wayne Matthews, Billy Crowley,
Keith Irish, Declan Barry, Michael McKevitt, Edward Clarke, Neil Kelly, Anthony Browne, David Bible, John Walsh, Keith Currams and Joseph Coady.

Background info on the Skuldelev 6
"Around the year 1070, five Viking ships were deliberately sunk at Skuldelev in Roskilde Fjord in order to block the most important fairway and to protect Roskilde from enemy attack from the sea. These ships, later known as the Skuldelev ships, were excavated in 1962. They turned out to be five different types of ships ranging from cargo ships to ships of war."
