In my garden designs I am more and more influenced by two major factors that I believe are very important to a successful , sustainable space that is a pleasure to be in. This garden is a space that 1) should be continually moving with life and 2) should also be directly connected with the way our seasons change, in this ( our ) part of the country. We can include these two essential design principals in our gardens by keeping hens,bees, an active water-feature, wildlife areas, growing fruit bushes or trees, vegetables, herbs, bird feeding areas, insect habitats, garden candles,etc etc. It will work on any scale! How much or how little you do will depend on space available, skill level and time available but one thing is certain, basing our garden design on nature will re- connect us with every thing that is good for our minds, body and souls,and working in it will be a tonic and keep us connected with what is really important. These ‘ nature influenced ‘ design principles that I talk about also lend themselves to pleasure gardens that are full of flowing lines, changing colours, multi species planting and movement of living ceatures.
