A psychology graduate from Edinburgh University, Donald began his career as a primary school teacher in Scotland, Japan and Ireland and specialised in teaching children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
Donald trained as an Educational Psychologist at the University of Dundee, Scotland and has worked in several Scottish local authorities as an Educational Psychologist, Senior Educational Psychologist and most recently as a Principal Educational Psychologist.
Donald was seconded to the Scottish Goverment in 2008 as a Professional Advisor to create a strategy for the integration of education and health services. http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2010/05/27095736/15
Donald is an experienced Expert Witness having represented local authorities in various educational and disability discrimination tribunals.
Donald has expertise in advising teachers, school principals, social work and medical professionals on the educational needs of young people. He is an expert in advising on dyslexia, ADHD, autism spectrum conditions, attachment disorders and social, emotional and behavioural problems. He is an expert in advising on cyber-bullying,and assisting parents with strategies to protect their children from harm while using social media.
Donald has experience in a number of therapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy/Approaches (CBT/CBA), Solution Focused Therapy, Rational Emotional Behavioural Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. Donald also has experience in Person Centred Approaches and Social Skills and Like Skills work.
Donald has very wide experience in the development of policy at all levels from government publications (e.g. Government level good practice guidance) through to individual school policies (e.g. positive behaviour policies).
Donald has a strong interest in Positive Psychology, the scientific study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. He has advised various schools on implementing positive psychological approaches to assist young people both in school and as they prepare for adult life, as well as at an organisational level with schools and education departments.
