The History of The Old Presbyterian Church, The Docks, Athlone This handsome church building was built to the design of an architect called E.P. Gribbon (c1821- c1898). Gribbon was an Irish born architect and quantity surveyor who trained in London. He seems to have returned to live and work in Ireland when he won a competition to design Ormond Quay Presbyterian Church in the mid 1840s. He worked on at least twenty-five important works between the years 1845-1860 many of them in Dublin. After 1860 Gribbon seems to have concentrated on quantity surveying and was a partner in a very successful Dublin practice. In 1858 he was commissioned by Rev J. Mawhinney to design this church building for Athlone, standing on ‘the new quay’ which was developed as part of the Shannon Navigation Works of the 1840s. The cost of the building was estimated at £800. The foundation stone was laid by Lord Castlemaine in August 1858. Lord Castlemaine was one of the leading Presbyterians in Athlone, his ancestor Major Thomas Handcock petitioned the General Synod of the Presbyterian Church to have services in Athlone in 1704. By June 1860 the building was finished and it was opened for Divine Service. The last Presbyterian minister resident in Athlone was Rev Robin Wilson who came to Athlone in 1938. He was appointed as minister of Ballinasloe, Athlone and Roscommon. In 1943 he resigned to become a R.A.F. chaplain. Athlone became a ‘stated supply’ for the Presbyterian minister of Tullamore and Birr in the early 1960s. Services ceased to be held in the church and were continued for a while in the Methodist Church in Northgate Street or in Clara until the Athlone congregation lapsed from assembly records in 1966. In the 1950s the tall spire of the Presbyterian Church was bought by Fr McGivney and re-erected on the Catholic church at Curry on the approach to Longford town where it was blessed by the Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, Dr McNamee in June 1957. Following its closure the old Presbyterian Church served as a warehouse for Hanley’s Cash and Carry. In the early 1990’s, the Hanley Family had the church converted into a restaurant, Le Chateau. In 2012 following further loving renovations it opened as The Locke Restaurant, under the proud management of the O’Shea Family who plan to tenderly continue the history of this exquisite church.

Juggling Athlone was founded in 2013 by seasoned Juggler, Andrew and his lady-friend, Laura. Andrew has been juggling for nearly eight years, and has decided to set up Juggling Athlone in order to teach other people how to juggle and provide a hub for current jugglers. Laura just wants an excuse to shout, "HOLD YOUR BALLS" without anyone passing judgement.

We are looking to connect with our current students, past students and wider community with a link to the Athlone Institute of Technology. At present we are in the process of formulating plans to allow individuals become members of the AIT Alumni Association. This would allow these individuals to avail of special services and offerings exclusive to the Alumni Association.
