Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport

Shannon Airport, Shannon ,
Shannon Airport is unique both in its location and its place in the history of world aviation. Of all European Airports it is situated at the most western point, making it the ideal stepping stone between the old world and the new. Chosen for its geographical position as the transatlantic gateway between Europe and America, Shannon was designated as Ireland’s Transatlantic Airport at its inception by the Irish Government. The airport itself covers about 2,000 acres in County Clare on the north bank of the Shannon Estuary and is located approximately 24 kilometres (15 miles) west of Limerick City and a similar distance south of Ennis. Shannon Airport meets all the requirements of a first class international airport and much more. Runway (06-24) is capable of taking the largest type of aircraft now in operation. This facility is used by scheduled and non-scheduled carriers. Together with Shannon’s temperate and varied weather conditions, it makes the airport an ideal location for flight training. There are almost 2000 people employed at the airport (not counting the nearby Industrial Estate) of which the airport itself employs about 500. The remainder are employed by a number of State Services including Air Traffic Control, State Radio, the Meteorological Service, Immigration, Customs, Agriculture, Public Health and Telecom as well as commercial services such as airlines, aircraft handling agencies, car hire, tourism interests, taxi hire and fuel companies. In addition some 1,000 temporary staff are recruited during the peak summer season. The airport is used by around 20,000 scheduled commercial aircraft and nearly 8,500 non-scheduled commercial aircraft. In all, there are around 26,000 aircraft movements at Shannon every year.

Weston Airport

Weston Airport

Weston Airport or Aerfort Weston in Irish, is a publicly licensed executive airport located on the R403 regional road at Leixlip, County Kildare 8 NM (15 km; 9.2 mi) west of Dublin, in Ireland. Its traffic is primarily business/executive as well as private and commercial training.Formerly developed by Jim Mansfield, the airport was seized by the National Asset Management Agency in 2011.HistoryWeston Aerodrome was originally founded in 1931 by Darby Kennedy, who, from 1946, operated a de Havilland Dragon and several Dragon Rapide aircraft commercially from the Weston flying field, operated under the name Weston Ltd. The charter flights frequently took the biplane airliners to airfields in the United Kingdom. The commercial flight operation ceased in the late 1950s.Also operated from the airfield was a flying school for private pilots with several Tiger Moth trainer biplanes, an Auster high-wing monoplane and from 1960 two Morane-Saulnier-Rallye four-seater low-winged aeroplanes.
Galway Airport

Galway Airport

Galway Airport is located at Carnmore, 4 NM (7.4 km; 4.6 mi) north of Galway City, County Galway, Ireland and is managed by Corrib Airport Limited. It has not serviced any flights since 31 October 2011, when Aer Arann ceased commercial operations at the airport. At 1289 m (4230 ft), the runway is too short to handle most jet airliners and so scheduled services are restricted to turboprop aircraft or small executive jets.HistoryDuring World War I a landing ground was built for the RAF at nearby Oranmore. It was later used by Aer Arann, a local flying club and private operators. However it remained a grass strip and was virtually unusable in Winter. Ernest Steiner, a German businessman built his own strip opposite his factory at Carnmore. Aer Arann moved in also and commenced operations from there in 1974.The runway was extended to 1200 metres and completed on 2 March 1987. Although it could accommodate larger aircraft it remained unsuitable for jet airliners and continues to be entirely served by regional turboprop aircraft such as the ATR-42. The first jet arrived at the airport on March 30 from Ohio USA. It was a 12 seater Gulf-Stream II and many more small business jets used the airport. A terminal and runway lighting was completed by June of that year. In January 1988 Aer Lingus re-introduced the Dublin route, in March Ryanair launched a new route to London Luton and later re-routed it to Stansted. The two airlines went into a business war, Ryanair offering cheap flights direct to London and Aer Lingus to Heathrow, Amsterdam and Paris on selected days via Dublin. In 1991 due to business restructuring Ryanair withdrew their London service and Aer Lingus were soon to follow.
