Better Building Conference

Better Building Conference

Croke Park Conference Centre, Jones's Road, Dublin ,
Organised in partnership with Enterprise Ireland by the Irish Green Building Council, Cultivate and the Sustainable Building Show, The Better Building has proven itself to be an unrivalled industry event that showcases best practice in sustainable constructionin association with Ecocem. This year's Better Building Conference will have over 40 speakers presenting in four parallel streams, covering topics such as green real estate, passive house standard, innovations and green materials. This allows attendees to customise their conference according to their professional needs and interest, updating themselves on the latest trends and research. To tie in with the Irish Presidency of the EU there will be a European emphasis to the event with updates on EU policy and presentations on best practice polices from around Europe. Speakers at the event will include Philip Lowe, the EU's most senior policy maker on energy; Ronan Lyons, Economist and author of the Daft Report; Thomas Mueller, CEO of the Canada Green Building Council, and Olivier Rapf, Director General of the Building Performance Institute of Europe. Philip Lowe will explore the implications of the recent European energy efficiency directive and the role the public sector will play in renovating their building stock. He will also cover new EU initiatives on financing mechanisms and the EU campaign on energy contracting. Irish companies will also gain insight into foreign markets from both Thomas Mueller, CEO of the Canada Green Building Council and leading international industry figures. The conference will also focus on Green Materials with Google presenting on their pilot project in Barrow St, Dublin which seeks to avoid the use of materials on the ‘red list’ - materials designated by the Living Building Challenge as ‘harmful’. The Living Building Challenge adaption forIrelanditself will be launched at the event. Continuing the theme of green materials, the introduction of the new embodied carbon database forIrelandwill be discussed. Speakers including Sean Lockie of RICSUKwill discuss how practitioners can use the database, and Dr. Jamie Goggins will present research showing how the type of buildings we build influences the embodied carbon per sq meter. Irelandis leading the way in the global market in Passive House expertise, with a high standard of both passive house designers and products available here. Tomas O’Leary of thePassiveHouseAcademywill present with leading Irish and international speakers on the ultimate low energy standard, showcasing exciting new projects and exploring the potential export markets. Estate agents and property experts can update themselves on the latest property economics research. Ronan Lyons of Daft.ie and Franz Fuerst of Cambridge University will discuss the recent trend in Europe, and now emerging in Ireland, where the value of a property is more and more related to its measured sustainability and energy efficiency. There will also be updates on the Green Public Procurement, building control and new climate change legislation from relevant Government officials from the Department of Environment. Further announcements on speakers are expected over the next number of weeks.
