Charity Boxing Tournament Aiming to raise €25,000+ for charity Limerick's Corpus Christi Boxing Club are running a Charity Boxing Tournament, which will see 30 athletes who have limited or no previous boxing experience enter a 12 week training programme. The event will culminate in a charity fight night where each athlete will fight for a purse of €1,000, which goes to their chosen charity. All proceeds from ticket sales will be divided amongst our nominated charities. This year sees Corpus Christi celebrating its 20th birthday, which has seen it become one of the biggest clubs in Munster. Combining this celebration with Limerick being the European City of Sport, President of Limerick Boxing Board and Senior Boxing Coach Declan Fitzgerald wanted to show people that amateur boxing can be a sport for all ages and abilities while raising some vital funds for local charities. The event is broken down into a 12 week training camp where athletes will train in 30 training sessions to prepare them for the main event Fight Night. This is open to everybody male, female, (over 18s) whether you have previous experience or not, whether you are fit or not. Senior Coaches Declan and Jeffery Fitzgerald will turn you into a boxer which they have been doing for 20 years with great success. Registration for the programme will take place at Corpus Christi Boxing Club The cost of the 12 week programme is €350 which will cover 30 gym training sessions and all the equipment required. Athletes will also have to raise €500 through sponsorship during there 12 week training camp which will be wagered on the Fight Night, with each bout having a purse of €1,000 and the winner taking all for their chosen charity. Training will take place on Tuesday and Tuesday and Thursday night and every second Saturday/Sunday. With 15 bouts on the card this will raise €15,000 for charities chosen by the athletes. All proceeds from ticket sales go straight to local charities, which the organisers aim to reach €10,000 and this will help local charities. The 12 week programme is being overseen by senior club coaches Declan Fitzgerald and Jeffrey Fitzgerald, and will also include some very renowned guest coaches and speakers. Declan Fitzgerald of Corpus Christi Boxing Club confirmed that the aim of the event is to raise much needed funding for charities while promoting amateur boxing as a sport for everybody. Commenting on the event Mr Fitzgerald said “We have had a huge response so far to the event especially from companies who have been quick to offer us any assistance they can. As this is a charity event we are dependent on such generosity which will mean we can raise even more money.”
